Nightrage

Nightrage

When one takes a look at the discography of Nightrage, they gaze upon a solid catolog of melodic death metal. Despite many lineup changes, founder and guitarist Marios Iliopoulos (second from right) has kept this band and its signature sound alive. No frills, aggressive, pissed off sounding metal that is unabashedly melodic, Nightrage is pumping out music that fuels us with late nineties Gothenburg energy. Their upcoming release is an official version of their 2000 demo session album. I took this as an excuse to bombard Marios with a whole bunch of questions that span the career of the band. This one's a good one. Hell yea.

Pyramaze

Pyramaze

While this might be listed as a Pyramaze interview, prolific keyboardist, piano dude, and orchestral composer Jonah Weingarten has also been involved with dozens of projects that span multiple genres. Here he is very open and candid about his life and day to day going ons as a professional musician in 2020. In an age where it seems everyone (including me) are complaining about the current state of affairs in the industry, here is a hard working musician who is continuing to be creative and produce high quality, enjoyable music.

We All Die (Laughing)

We All Die (Laughing) was an unknown band to me until I saw them listed in the list of Promo CD's. I was interested by the tag of "Avante Garde" and had to give it a listen. What came from it, was an incredible surprise, and one of the better progressive style albums I've heard in some time. I was able to talk to both members of the band and get some insight to the album, and where it all came from.

It took me a while to finalize this interview, but I did it. Between getting my questions answered and after that getting them translated, probably close to 3 months passed. Hopefully, the readership will be rewarded, however, by having a chance to glimpse into the mind of one Master Alafern, the leader of Ukrainian industrial death band Thunderkraft. Iced Earth

Iced Earth

Welcome to the bane of one reviewer's "professional" existence. To hopefully-real-quick clarify why this single interview is coming out so late...October 2008, during my student exchange year in America, I was honored to interview one of my favourite musicians of all time, Iced Earth's Jon Schaffer, when they played The Palladium in Worcester, MA. Great show, interview went really smoothly, awesome. As a combination of study-rushing, probably-once-in-a-lifetime-chance to travel around the US and procrastination delayed the uploading of this interview to june 2009, my activity was crippled by worrying that the piece wasn't current enough at the time. As much of the interview dealt with the Crucible Of Man-album, I decided to wait until the mentioned Something Wicked-box set would come out, since the album would be a part of it. Surely a dumb decision in hindsight (which is always 20/20), but you live and learn. Now that The Box was finally released by Century Media last month, and we're still feverishly waiting for the talked-about-below Festivals of the Wicked-DVD (and as Schaffer's new Sons Of Liberty-project is officially releasing their debut album next month), the time has come for Metalreviews.com to present my chitchat with Jon Schaffer that took place in their tour bus on that brisk October evening (He also signed my kazoo after the formalities, yay!).

Khors

Khors

This interview was a while in the making. I really liked Khors latest Mysticism album, and thought I could pose a few questions for one of the band founding members. As Khorus was busy it took some time to connect. Then some of my personal circumstances stood in a way of editing and posting this faster. Here it is, however, a conversation with one of the prominent members of the influential Ukrainian black metal scene.

Nightwish

Nightwish

I was very happy about this interview. Since Dark Passion Play is two years old, I decided to push promoting that album to the side a bit. I think the interview with Marco a couple of years ago covers that. Whenever possible I like to interview the members that write the songs in the band. I have noticed that there is something unique about all these people. People such as Tobias Sammet, David Defeis, Tony Kakko, Derek Bonner, and Tuomas Holopainen. I like to delve into these folks a bit to try and find out how such great music is created.

Once again my encounter with Nightwish was pure class. I feel I have to mention this at every opportunity because for a band of this caliber, they are completely courteous professionals. From their tower of power manager Ewo, who is to Nightwish what Rod Smallwood is to Iron Maiden, to the crew, and the other band members themselves, everyone was total class. Nightwish are the de facto standard on how to be a professional touring and recording band.

Yngwie Malmsteen

Yngwie Malmsteen

This was my first ever phone interview. Of all people it happened to be with Yngwie Malmsteen, but at least I did not have to profess in admiration to the guy half my age. So, maybe, I went overboard, telling Yngwie a few personal stories from the years gone by long time ago, instead of just plain going through the list of Q & As. The connection was terrible, Yngwie's cell phone went out once, disconnecting, but he was persistent, parking his car at some Florida beach, trying to finish the talk. In the end, I found him to be a really cool, easy to talk to, guy, despite what some of the earlier images might have indicated. Whether the interview was interesting and you learned something about the artist and his latest album - you decide.

Sonata Arctica

Sonata Arctica

I believe that this interview with Sonata Arctica makes it a first ever "three-peat" for Metal Reviews. I'm so glad that it is with a band of the caliber of Sonata Arctica as well. This past September, the Nightwish / Sonata Arctica US tour was a soggy dream come true and I had to ham it up with the guys. Again, grateful for any show I can see of them, the boys of winter delivered the goods. Before the show, out back behind the venue, in a relaxed atmosphere I spoke to keysman Henrik Klingenberg and new guitarist Elias Viljanen. This is a highly personal interview. I know pretty much everything about this band, inside and out and I thought it would be nice to probe the psyche and personality of the individuals present. So, if you're wondering "what does Sonata Arctica mean" or "who is Dana or Tallulah" then check out my other two interviews with Tony Kakko as well as tons more on the net.

Arsis

Arsis

I've seen Arsis six times in the past year. That type of work ethic alone shows that this is a band serious about their craft. I always enjoy their company and conversation and since there is a new album out, We Are The Nightmare, I figured that now is as good a time as any for a round two interview. Gathered around my living room, lounging on sofas, and enjoying the cool recirculated air, I got the guys to give me their thoughts on their latest creation amongst other musically interesting ideas.

Testament

Testament

I remember the first time I heard Testament. It was in junior high and my friend brought over Return To The Apocalyptic City. It was a mini live EP and the first song on the album was Over The Wall. We were playing San Francisco Rush on the Nintendo 64 when those lead guitar strains came out the stereo and rocked my cock like nothing else. I put down the controller, got up, and hit rewind on the stereo. I kept playing that song over and over again to the point where my friend said "Damn man, they have this at Hastings go buy it already." Unfortunately, someone else must have picked up that cool looking cd with the exploding head and I was without Testament for a couple of weeks. It wasn't until a visit to Austin where my dad scored me The Legacy at Tower Records that I entrenched myself in this California metal machine. Since then Testament has been one of the few mainstay thrash bands that never left my record collection.

Now in 2008 I have the opportunity to talk to lead six stringer Alex Skolnick. Testament are out touring on a monster package in their Metal Masters tour. A wet dream come to life for metal fans, Testament is playing alongside Motorhead, Black Sabbath (Heaven and Hell doesn't exist to me outside of the first BLACK SABBATH album with Dio), and Judas Priest. Since this wasn't my usual forty minute plus convo I had to keep things brief but covered all the bases. A little bit about the new album, The Formation Of Damnation, a little bit of guitar talk, sagely advice, and a trip down memory lane.

From left to right Testament is: Paul Bostaph, Alex Skolnick, Cuck Billy, Eric Peterson, and Greg Christian.

Epica

Epica

The first time I heard Epica was with their debut album The Phantom Agony. I remember getting that cd in the mail after hearing glowing recommendations and decided to give, what I thought was "gothic metal" another try. Instead what blasted out of the speakers was classically infused power metal that really grabbed my attention. I've kept up with them ever since.

The simple fact that Epica is touring the United States with Into Eternity and Symphony X shows that metal is stirring again on these once barren lands. At the concert there were people thrashing like madmen during Into Eternity and even stage diving constantly. I thought I was in a Megadeth video. Epica were in the direct support slot and most of the crowd was already familiar with them. They even got a band chant after their set which surprised me.

US native Amanda Somerville, vocal coach to Simone Simmons, was filling in for the fiery red head due to her serious bout with MRSA infection. Full details and updates can be found on www.epica.nl. Amanda did a terrific job and as Simone's teacher, she showed that she could handle her own. Following the set I spoke to guitarist Ad Sluijter (second from right) about all things Epica. Their latest album The Divine Conspiracy is a heady concept album that clocks in at an hour and fifteen minutes. Surely there's something interesting to be said about that. A couple of beers in the back lounge and that Ad is a great conversationalist made for a fun, informative chat.

Nightwish

Nightwish

It really doesn't seem like it has been that many years since I was sitting in the dark at home listening to Nightwish while playing the RPG Secret Of Mana. I remember thinking that I was the only person in the world to listen to this weird European band with some wild opera singer. Actually, Nightwish was the first band that really broke down my "no chicks in metal" mentality. Songs like The Riddler, Bare Grace Misery, and Ever Dream resonated strongly inside of me. Fast forward several years and Nightwish have gone from being that weird European band with some wild opera singer to an established institution in the metal scene. Instead of thinking I'm the only person in the world enjoying this band I'm in a packed club with barely any breathing room while everyone around me is going insane for the four dudes and one girl on stage.

Seemingly overshadowing the Stratovarius soap opera of 2003, former singer Tarja Turenen has been ousted and the new smiling face of Annette Olzon has been included in the Nightwish ranks. How she came into the band and all the other drama surrounding that situation has been discussed to death. When I sat down and interviewed Marco I made a valiant attempt at an in depth interview on both the Nightwish side and his personal history.

Dark Tranquillity

One of our victims during the hectic festival summer of '07 was Dark Tranquillity, who rolled to Finland in June for the Sauna Open Air Metal Festival. We were given ten minutes for this chat and the prepared questions for guitarist Martin Henriksson were thrown into the bin as last minute arrangements led us together with the band's other ax-maestro, Niklas Sundin. Undaunted, we improvised some Q's out of our asses. The results were as follows.

Arsis

Arsis

Arsis is a working man's heavy metal band. What started out as a project between two friends has become an entity unto itself. Founder (and only original member) James Malone now has a full band line up with which to prowl North America. A freshly inked record deal with Nuclear Blast following two highly praised albums and one adventurous EP on the independent Willowtip label has the band perched on the bubble of success. Still, through their rise in the ranks of the metal world Arsis is still a band that goes out of their way to talk to and appreciate their fans. They'll crash at your pad if you want and might even step in to pinch hit on your girl if you're into that. I was able to corner Noah Martin and James Malone during the Summer Slaughter tour in San Antonio and got a very honest, and enthusiastic interview out of the two. Enjoy.

Annihilator

For both high-quality speed metal and the creme de la creme of the canadian-bred metal, I look towards Jeff Waters and Devin Townsend, depending on my mood. We sat down with big chieftain Jeff Waters for an interview at the Culture House in Helsinki.

Cannibal Corpse

Cannibal Corpse

In the world of death metal, styles are varied and flows of trends have been ever-changing since the 1980s. However, some rare gems are constants and in this particular scene, the allmighty Cannibal Corpse is one of the brightest (or should I say vilest) stones. The band has lately been touring relentlessly in support of their latest slice of awesomness, KILL. We sat down with guitarmaestro Rob Barrett as the Death Walking Tour '07 rolled to Finland last March.

Machine Men

Machine Men has been conquering the melodic metal scene of Finland for quite a while now, with occasional jaunts beyond our boarders. Century Media has finally started to shift some major gears for the group and the touring schedule is building mightily. Dragonland

Dragonland is a bright, rising star of the power metal community. Hailing from Sweden, they hover above the greyest of mass with their über-grandiose orchestrations and movie-like thematics. Blind Guardian

Blind Guardian

2006's A Twist In The Myth topped many year end lists and was one of the years most anticipated releases. The four German bards have been a leader in the metal community for a decade and a half now and are finally receiving the lavish praise and attention that they have earned. However, despite the fact that Blind Guardian can throw a very successful two day festival of their own so they can film a DVD in Europe, they have only toured the US and Canada twice in their storied career. I was able to talk to Andre Olbrich about the creativity machine behind Blind Guardian, the apparent rising popularity of the band in North America, and found out that Halo 2 doesn't have shit on World Of Warcraft.

Thanks to Loana at Nuclear Blast. Other than holding my hand and asking the questions for me she is the reason this interview took place.

Kaledon

I recently had a chance to chat again with Kaledon's Alex Mele, guitarist, principle songwriter and author of the massive Legend Of The Forgotten Reign saga. For those who love the speedy, epic symphonic metal that Rhapsody pioneered in the late 90's (but doesn't do anymore) check this band out. Soilwork

Soilwork

I caught up with Soilwork when they came into San Antonio for the "Last Stab" Tour with Mnemic, Darkest Hour, and Threat Signal. It was a really fun show and also marked it the third show I've seen Mnemic at with three different singers. This new long haired biker looking guy is shaping up to the better replacement for the long departed Michael. The weather was nice and cool and everybody was in good spirits. I interviewed their singer and co founder of the band, Bjorn "Speed" Strid. He is a very enigmatic guy. He is passionate about his work and actually seemed to enjoy talking about it even though I was probably interview number five thousand that he's gone through. Since the album that Soilwork was promoting was over a year old they pulled out some older songs and shifted a few more around to make it quite an interesting night. I kicked it with Bjorn on their bus before they went on stage and got to pick his brain for a good bit.

Scars

The once scorched and blackened grounds of Brazil's underground metal scene is again teeming with life. New bands have emerged; old bands resurrected, once again firmly rooted. After a six year hiatus, Scars pulled itself from the grave in 2004. Two years later they have made their presence known with a blistering thrash metal assualt called The Nether Hell, six tracks of unforgiving and relentless thrash metal.

Lacuna Coil

Lacuna Coil

Lacuna Coil is one of the few success stories that this beloved metal genre has. They have literally risen from nothing to acclaimed international stars. Through years of hard work, dedication, and patience they have begun to reap the benefits of being embraced by the ever fickle and influential American music scene. However, despite thier newfound popularity they are still rooted in solid heavy metal and make no qualms about it. Guitarist Cristiano was more than happy to discuss all things Lacuna both in San Antonio and Houston! Speaking of which this was one of the hardest interviews to do. The original interview that I conducted in San Antonio was destroyed (along with almost all my sleeves) due to massive hail storms and I had to book it to Houston two days later to redo the interview on my 1988 tape recorder. Thank you Cris and thank you Clint from Century Media for the patience to put up with me.

Vanishing Point

Vanishing Point

Vanishing Point's latest release, Embrace The Silence, went down as one of the most underrated bombshells of 2005. When I hear people today complain of the lack of great music in the Melodic Rock and Metal scene I ask them if they have heard Embrace The Silence. When the answer is no then I point them in that direction and tell them to stop their bitching. I recently conducted a short interview with the singer of this Aussie sextet, Silvio Massaro, whose highly charged mid range vocals and smooth delivery are an integral part of the Vanishing Point sound.

Nevermore

Nevermore

Nevermore is one of those rare bands where each album is a logical refinement of their sound. This Godless Endeavor is a thick and hearty slab of technically precise metal and is sure to top many best of lists come year's end. I spoke with Jim Sheppard at their San Antonio stop for Gigantour about the new blonde fellow in the all the promo shots (Steve Smyth) and the specifics on recording This Godless Endeavor.

Into Eternity

Into Eternity

I conducted this interview with Tim Roth (along with a few words from drummer Adam Sagan) in the bands RV after their set in San Antonio, Texas. I have been an ardent supporter of this band for about a year now. They are one of the few bands out there today that can truly be called unique with their blend of Death Metal, Prog, and Power elements. Into Eternity is also one of the hardest working bands that I know of. This year alone they have been on the road for the majority of the year and with a new album looming in 2006 I reckon they’ll be back out again before they themselves would even like. Very significant line up changes (such as three singers in a year!) would cripple or even kill lesser bands but not Into Eternity. They continue to solider on and unleash their fiery brand of heavy metal on the world and I have no doubt that the future is quite bright for this Canadian quintet.

Dark Tranquillity

Master picture taken by Lindor Tidang and provided by Century Media.

Dark Tranquillity. A band that is as innovative as it is uncompromising. In their lengthy career I have always counted on these collective Swedes to create music that is above and beyond the call of duty. Their latest output, Character, is another album in long line of releases that is concrete proof that Dark Tranquillity are masters of their craft. When I saw them live in Austin, Texas, back in April I had the priviledge to interview Niklas Sundin and discuss life and its many fallacies.

Special thanks go to George Vallee from Century Media, Skid from Century Media, and Paul, Dark Tranquillity's tour manager. Without their help this interview would not have taken place.

I have to admit though this being my second in person interview and after having spent the entire day with the guys I was a little nervous heading into the interview, I wanted this one to be the best they had done. Held in the back alley of the venue, The Backroom, I talked to the whole band about the ordeals and tribulations of being a young group on the rise.
From left to right Lilitu are: Jason Piona, (guitars) Corey Taylor, (drums) Jonah Weingarten, (keys) Derek Bonner, (vocals / guitars) and Noah Martin (bass).

I.C.E. (Imperial Crystalline Entombment)

I.C.E.'s Apocalyptic End in White roared on the black metal scene recently. Those unlucky ones who haven't had the opportunity to listen to it yet need to hear it to believe it. Those who have been exposed to the album still stand, jaws dropped, in stunning disbelief. Furious speed blasts, monstrous riffs, bottom heavy production, searing vocals - and everything is immersed in the subarctic COLD. I.C.E. members do not walk about in public, and don't easily grant interviews. However, Metal Reviews team has been one of the first to talk with these Reincarnated Demons of the Cold. Whether we got the answers we were looking for, or whether the shroud of mystery only got thicker - you decide.

Pyramaze

I gave Pyramaze's debut album, Melancholy Beast my first ever Album of the Year award and it was rightfully deserved. I have yet to hear an album this year that has completely dominated my stereo as much as this. The songs are simply amazing in every fashion, from the heavy and hard hitting riffs, to the intricate and demanding melodies, this is music that me makes me proud to be a metalhead. I figured it was time to do a followup interview and this time I had the pleasure of speaking to the founder and guitarist of this band, Michael Kammeyer.

Jaded Heart

Jaded Heart's latest offering Trust, is quite simply one the finest Melodic Rock albums I've heard in a long time. Destined to be the album that they will always be remembered by, it is chock full of everything that is endearing about the genre. I called Michael in the studio to talk about the album and all things Jaded, and found out some very interesting happenings are in store for the guys. Seeing as I have been a fan of these German rockers longer than almost every other band I have interviewed, I admit I was a little bit more excited and nervous than normal when I picked up my question sheet and began to rail them off to Michael, but I needn't have worried as this turned out to be one of the most fun and off the cuff interviews I have done.

Pyramaze

This interview has a few firsts to it. The first time I have done an in person and the first time Metal Reviews has interviewed an artist who's album has not yet been released. Pyramaze might not be a familiar name to you as of now, but believe me you will soon be blasting their Melancholy Beast with the utmost urgency when it is released. I interviewed Jonah when I flew down to Virginia to chill with him and record a failed demo as my editorial on this pointed out. During the recordings, chicken wings, Halo sessions, and the metal party I managed to get him to talk about himself and his band. Pyramaze are (from left to right): Niels Kvist, bass, Morten Gade, drums, Lance King, vocals, Jonah Weingarten, keys, and Michael Kammeyer, guitars. Manticora

Manticora

In January, we reviewed Manticora's first LP "Roots Of Eternity" (awarded it 86 / 100). With their straight power / speed metal songs like "Nowhere Ends" & "When Forever Ends" (this song alone justifies buying the album), the thrashy "Intoxicated" (wow !!!) and the final epic one "Roots Of Eternity", this very good power metal album will find its place near Iced Earth's "Something Wicked This Way Comes", Gamma Ray's "Land Of The Free" or Blind Guardian's "Tales From The Twilight World".

German speed metal mixed with US power metal, this is the kind of music you will discover in Manticora's "Roots Of Eternity". From the first E.P. "Dead End Solution" (name of the band at that time was Manticore) to their first LP, the voice of Lars has tremendously changed and improved. A new singer is born. It's Friday the 18th of February, 2000 and it's 21:00 here in Geneva. The phone rang and it's Lars Larsen here's our conversation with him.

If I'm ever exiled to an island, Ambiguity will be with me. After all the bad luck this band has suffered with different singers, Andy B.
